Ram Chetandas
THE IDEALIST AND HIS UNENDING ROMANCE WITH GAMECOCKS

By: Mark Remigio
Dateline: Daraga, Albay

Born November 26 forty-three moons ago, Ram popularly known as AGRam, showed peculiar interest in gamecocks and sabong at the early age of 13. Despite the obvious objection and discouragement from his father and other relatives arising from differences in outlooks and religious beliefs, Rampersisted in doing what he believed in. For him, cockfighting or sabong is not gambling but a challenging sport where the rich and poor are equals inside the cockpit, almost.
Getting married at 20 to a beautiful bulakena did not stop him from pursuing his first love...sabong. In fact, it turned out to be a lucky opportunity for him to receive imported birds from his father-in-law, Cesar Grageda, who then, had gamecock farm in Pandi Bulacan. John Macaulsky of New Jersey brought here as eggs hand-carried by his daughter, a flight stewardess.
In 1993, Ram established a poultry supply store for his own needs and convenience. And in 1995, he decided to start breeding with some stocks from his father-in-law. Among his favorites are Kelso, McLean Hatch and Regular Grays. Without batting an eyelash, Ram claims that he is one of the founders of Bicol Gamefowl Breeders Association or BIGBA along with Alex Tang of Daet, Camarines Norte. He currently serves as Vice-president.
Today, aside from a boming 200 stag population in his idyllic farm in Camalig Albay, his AGRam Poulrty Store is one of Univet's volume makers in both gamefowl and veterinar products in the entire Bicol region. Indeed, Ram's romance with gamcocks has taken him a long way and the persistent lover proclaims, it will be forever.
